Counselling Services - Private Practice

In a safe, confidential and non-judgemental setting, clients are able to explore issues or concerns that seem to overwhelm them and/or contribute to unhealthy behaviour and thought patterns. In this setting, clients are able to confront themselves with true honesty and explore completely what would be different if they could live more freely – be the person that they would like to be from the inside out.

Counselling focuses on helping the client resolve personal and/or interpersonal issues. Clients are often troubled by their world-view, ingrained beliefs or lack of confidence. This troublesome mindset may keep the individual stuck in a state of tension manifested by negative emotions, poor self-esteem, fear, depression and/or angry reactions.

Clients often seek help when they cannot resolve their own problems or when their coping mechanisms have broken down – often times as a result of a “last straw” event. NOTE: There is always a solution to any troubling life issue no matter how difficult, desperate or horrific it may seem.

Often times a life transition (move, divorce, death, new relationship, new baby, new job, planned or unplanned retirement etc… or turning 35, 40, 50, 60 (see mid-life coaching) …can trigger a difficult coping time and allow individuals to fall into a depressive, anxious or angry state. It takes insight and understanding and acceptance to navigate such a transition process. A transition is different than a change in that it impacts our internal thought processes. Claire did a major thesis on navigating a life transition and continues to expand her work and knowledge in this area given that more and more people go through many transitions in their lifetime.

Client issues are addressed and explored from a whole-life perspective. The client is guided toward solution and resolution with Vision-to-Action thinking. Once problematic concerns, negative feelings and/or past experiences are resolved then the client can move forward to first uncover his/her aspirations and then to plan the process of goal achievement.

Much conflict in relationships is due to poor communication, misunderstanding and faulty assumptions. Again in a safe, confidential and non-judgemental setting, couple’s therapy takes place where each person can articulate the issues in the relationship and be given the space to listen to and understand their partner’s world view. Often times in couple’s therapy individual sessions will be scheduled as well as couple sessions. When each partner can truly understand the other then change can take place. When partners are both motivated to work issues through then positive change in the dynamics of the relationship happens. Separation can be the decision reached between both partners, yet such a decision can be carried through in a humane and understanding way.

Registered with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (www.bc-counsellors.org) and certified with the Employee Assistance Professional Association, Claire Sutton is a sought-after specialist in the field of counselling.
