Employee Assistance Programs (EAP)
Employee & Family Assistance Programs ( EFAP)
Though most workplaces today have an EFAP, many people in the field and in organizations still use the EAP acronym to refer to this unique workplace benefit.
An EAP is a specialized workplace benefit in place for both the employer and the employee. It is a unique benefit in that it is often not part of an employee’s extended benefits. Both union and management also support such a benefit. It adheres to the highest ethical standards of confidentiality. Only non-identifiable statistics are reported back to the organization on either a quarterly, semi-annually or yearly basis, depending on the size of the organization.
A large component of EAP is brief solution-focused counselling. Again, it is highly confidential otherwise the program would not work. Such counselling is available to the employees and their family members, most often spouse or partner and dependent children. Such counselling is available to help employees and / or family members deal with work or personal issues that could be interfering with job performance. Counselling is only one component of a full service EAP. Today, counsellors doing EAP work need to have significant experience and training in the ever-evolving field of EAP.
EAPs evolved over the last 30 years. They originally dealt with Alcohol and Drug issues impacting employees and their workplaces. It has evolved to offer services to both the employees and their immediate family members for any personal or work-life issue that could be impacting their job performance and/or their personal life. A full serviced EAP can deal with any human factor or risk management issue affecting the workplace.
