NAVIGATING THE DIVORCE TRANSITION PROCESS WITH DIGNITY

Whether you are thinking about ending your marriage (or common law relationship) or your partner has told you
that the relationship is over, it is a good idea to seek professional help with an experienced professional such as a Registered Clinical Counsellor trained in divorce support. No matter what the reasons are, divorce or the ending of a committed relationship is painful. It has often been described as an ‘emotional roller-coaster’ because so many painful emotions are experienced, uncharacteristic behaviours may result and one’s identity is profoundly shaken.

There are many losses (real and imagined) associated with the ending of a marriage or committed relationship. It is very important to understand and grieve the losses (even if relief is felt at having ended an unhealthy relationship).

Much of the emotional processing can be done prior to pursuing legal advice or in conjunction with legal advice as well as with the pacing of the legal process. If the emotional processing (the hurt, anger, fear) is not worked through, it can negatively impact the legal process especially in terms of extra legal work, higher costs and prolonged emotional pain.

As a credentialed mental health professional, Claire Sutton has expertise in couple and family dynamics including issues pertaining to separation and divorce. She helps her clients successfully navigate the emotional process involved in divorce by ensuring that needs, concerns and feelings (including anger and fear) are both expressed and contained. Claire will work with either one or both partners who are separating with the goal of moving through the process with dignity so that each person can see themselves beginning anew with confidence. If children are involved, the best interests of the children are always at the forefront. Claire teaches communication skills, addresses parenting concerns and helps formulate parenting plans.

Claire Sutton is a highly skilled solution-focused therapist and coach which makes her an excellent Separation & Divorce Coach/Therapist. Claire has done extensive research in the area of major life transitions and more specifically in the transition back into single life from a positive perspective following the dissolution of a marriage or long term relationship.
